A DOOR IS PROBABLY THE FIRST BARRIER against attack from burglars or intruders. Whether it is a rear door, fire door or even a front door, the security integrity of your door can be the difference between a criminal making an easy entrance and quick getaway, or an empty handed escape.
There is little point in having a good, strong security door if the door frame itself is not up to the job. The door may still be intact from an attack, but this is not much consolation if the hinges have come away from the door, or the frame comes out of the wall or itself breaks up.
The leading national standard for Security Doors is provided by the Loss Prevention Certification Board. The LPS1175 certification applies levels of Security Rating (SR) for doors, with SR 1 being low risk and SR 5 & 6 used for high security risk situations.
Here we aim to help you determine whether a product has the appropriate level of security for its application and risk factor. It is a clear comparison between established security standards appropriate for the protection of doors and windows against burglary.
SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE PRODUCT The selection of the appropriate physical protection for doors and windows will depend on a number of issues including the following:
Location of door or window Location of the property Value of the property Value or desirability of the goods or information within the premises The risks relating to the loss of, interruption to business The use of additional security products and technology, including CCTV, intruder detection equipment and assets marking systems
LEVELS OF SECURITY DOOR LPS1175 Security Rating (SR) 5 & 6 - HIGH RISK Very high security Doorsets LPS 1175 SR 5 certification is a minimum standard for high risk situations. Products certified to these security standards have resisted a series of professional attack tests each lasting up to 30 minutes using a wide variety of powerful mains operated tools.
LPS1175 SR 3 & 4 - MEDIUM RISK Doorsets or Rolling Shutters for door and window openings LPS 1175 SR 3 certification is a minimum standard for medium risk situations. Products certified to these security standards have resisted a series of professional attacks, each lasting up to 30 minutes (SR 4) or 20 minutes (SR 3) using a wide variety of battery operated power tools.
LPS1175 SR 1 & 2 - LOW RISK Doorsets, Rolling Shutters, Security Grilles or Windows for door and window openings BS PAS 24 or LPS 1175 SR 1 certification is a minimum standard for low risk situations. Products certified to these security standards have resisted a series of professional attacks, each lasting up to 15 minutes (SR 2 & PAS 24) or 10 minutes (SR 1) using a variety of hand tools such as hammers, crowbars, chisels and hacksaws.
BS3621 and EN1303 Grades 4-6 - MINIMUM Locking devices for doors and windows Locks should be independently certified to BS3621 or incorporated cylinders that have been independently certified to EN1303, as a minimum protection. These standards cover the mechanical performance of the lock-set or cylinder for doors. They do not guarantee the resistance of the door to which they are fitted, although they can enhance the resistance to certain forms of attack.
